Take a look at these two images. On the left is Raph’s BB Hood image created in 2009, on the right is the image released by Capcom for Devil May Cry a little later.

Just random chance? Of course not. Here’s why our completely unfounded conspiracy theory has legs.

1) Raph knows people from Capcom.
The art in particular was also shared with numerous people at Capcom and recognized by Capcom on its forums, so it’s made its way around. That’s kind of how stuff like this gets around. We’ve also been eating hors d’oeuvres and drinking beverages with Capcom people for a while now at numerous events in Southern California: Dead Rising, SFIV, RE, Triumvir x Shadaloo, SDCC, etc., so it wouldn’t be hard to make the mental link to an artist’s work.

2) He’s a known artist.
The video game industry isn’t that big, and artists tend to follow what each other do. Raph has been creating 3D work for a while now. So unlike fan art, Raph’s work would get shown around in a different way, “Hey, check out this image that Raphael did. You remember him from E3? Cool, right?” Side Note: Raph’s image on the left is actually a 3D model done in Z-Brush. Check the original post Raph made on his blog.

3) There aren’t that many mug shot pictures on the internet.
I figured that there’d be a slew of pictures of Mario, Zelda, Sonic, etc. in mugshot fashion, but it’s not really a big thing at all. So if there *were* any influences (see point 1), then there’d be very few sources that inspiration could come from. Hmmm…

Did Capcom steal anything from Raph? I probably wouldn’t use those words, but somewhere along the way, that image got created, and in the back of someone’s mind, there are fond memories of a badass BB Hood image. So we just want to set the record straight. Raph came first.

Theo and I recently got the chance to check out a special screening of Wreck-It Ralph, and seeing it, we made sure to put together a quick podcast to let you know our thoughts on the movie before it came out. There are two parts of this podcast, one without spoilers, and then another one talk like you’ve seen the movie.

Thoughts from Andrew Wilson – game industy artist and certified badass – Wreck it Ralph is rad.

The movie was done so well that if I didn’t know Disney made it, I would have guessed that they did. ¿Is it still cool to hate the big corporation just for being giant and full of money and awesome? If it is then I guess I’m one of those lame pedestrians that just likes things because they’re good and not because it was made by some indie jack. Good job Disney, I trust you to represent 8-Bit heritage, even if it was dunked in pink goo, covered in sprinkles and run by little tiny big head baby girls with little California girl attitudes.

It’s a kids movie and that reads through and through, but the references were good (albeit safe) and done really beautifully. The way the designers kept pushing pixels into the visuals was nice and subtle, coming across in break patterns and splotches of goo and whatnot. The dropped frames on the Fix it Felix world denizens was a good touch.

Do not go and see this movie if you’re not a big fan of the color pink or candy though. And catch it late, because it’s going to be filled with rug rats, who will laugh at all the ‘doodie’ jokes so hard that you’d think they were on the take.

Myself – I’m hoping for a sequel that gets a little more obscure and into the world of good old arcades. I will be buying this and stacking it next to King of Kong, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and any other movies that represent the tastes of us 8-Bit lovers.

¿How good was seeing a Dig Dug dude done THAT well by Disney? So good. That was golden.

Mayhaps if people support this film, we’ll see some video games that are artistically represented in CG.

Thoughts from Darion Lowenstein – VP of Nerddom / Game Industry Lifer at Digital Artists (his douchey-sounding title is Vice President, Interactive)

As gamers, I feel like we often don’t get the nostalgic pop culture love so many other genres experience in Film & TV. Wreck-It Ralph is a fantastic homage to gamers born in the 70′s and 80′s; a send up to our favorite hobby packed and sold as a kid’s movie. The thinly disguised spoofs of games like Call Of Duty and Mario Kart are hilarious, all packed with cameos from classics like Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and even Q-Bert. Seeing Wreck-It Ralph brought back a rush of classic nostalgia as well as a strong urge to play those games again. It’s clear Ralph was written by video game nerds, and supported in a studio system that understood gamers.

No, REALLY! Simply put, this film is a MUST SEE for any gamer who started gaming in the 80′s and 90′s. Thanks Disney – I’m impressed!”

Thoughts from Tina Hou – game industry veteran artist who has worked on console games, online games, mobile games and social games.

I like that Wreck-It Ralph is a movie made up of all video game characters, and I like how many characters made cameo appearances in this movie. I was also surprised how well they brought together many different art styles from the various characters in one movie. There are some ideas that only video game developers would recognize. But they simplified the concepts and explained everything well with a visually interesting way. The story took place primarily on three different environments including 8bit-old-school games, a Mario-Kart-like game and the Halo-like game. This means they covered the main marketing targets from old school gamers, causal gamers, to the hard core gamers. However, the Mario Kart-like stage is on a fantasy candy land. So they pushed the color to be more vibrating and satisfying visually. I liked it!
