8-Bit Cubist Video: PAX 2011 – Are Games Stagnating?

After getting into a few discussions about the video game industry going stale, we decided to ask a few people at PAX what they thought about the whole argument. Most of our discussions brought up some pretty good thoughts, but our friend, Bruno insisted that he get his thoughts on camera.

You guys should have interviewed me while I was there, I would have ripped all day about this! But yeah I totally agree! But to be fair, that section of EA under that sign was actually hosting, and funding all indie games through a branch of their company that I found to be pretty interesting.

But yeah this is definitely something that needs to be brought to the forefront of the gaming community. I actually had this conversation with a lot of developers about this while I was there. And I’m going to keep it brief with out going into to much detail, but it seems that yes the industry does keep a tight clamp on their games. I asked one of the project managers from a certain establish game franchise how much creative freedom do they get.

He got really uncomfortable about it, and told me a lot of things where confidential. But an elating fact was that on the creative side of things, when programmers had an idea for a certain gun or whatever element of the game, that they probably came up with on their own time, they could pitch it to their manager, and they could put it into game.

But yeah I’m so sick and tired of this industry that I’m going to take a stab at it soon. Learning XNA right now, I have some really cool ideas for a new 2d fighting game engine. But yeah thank you guys bringing up topics like this. It definitely needs to be brought through fruition.

@ Reido – thanks for your comments and for your support.

good luck with your fighting game on XNA. let us know when it comes out. right now, it seems like that area of the gaming industry, independent dev, is where creative freedom and successes are coming from.
