Haroshi Respects Used Skateboards and Mario

“Haroshi makes his art pieces recycling old used skateboards.” That’s the simple explanation from the website, but like any good artist, there’s much more to his it than that. There’s an entire philosophy and history to his work, but his attention to the pixel brings him to The 8-Bit Cubist.

These works are more than just cute images though. Haroshi makes his sculptures based on a Japanese art form. Many of the wooden Buddhas are created in the same way that he creates his pieces. And if you’ve ever seen how varied skateboard decks are, then you should be able to figure out that it’s not simple to put together these types of images. You need just the right decks, and since he’s working from used boards, each piece has a definite personality of its own.
