Scott Pilgrim vs The Lame

Scott Pilgrim has plenty of videogame references in it. But it’s more than references, it’s a big part of the whole Scott Pilgrim world. It’s all set up with boss fights, powerups, and the kind of stuff that makes sense to most people reading this blog. The whole brand is producing good product, from the manga, to the movie, to the merchandising, to the game (PSN and XBLA). That’s a pretty good track record.

Usually what happens is that Hollywood finds something cool, and does a pretty good job of destroying the brand as soon as possible. They make their living off of killing any golden geese they find. For the movie, they went to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright.

For the game development, they went to Ubisoft. They’ve had enough history of making games, so they’re capable. But why them? It was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Scott Pilgrim lives in Toronto, and the writer, Bryan Lee O’Malley is from Ontario. Just like comprehensive health care, they’re all Canadian.

So the entire Scott Pilgrim license is currently doing well by its audience, and I can only attribute that to the creative teams finding good people to represent it. This is classic stuff, and it’s good.
