Joysticks the Movie: We’ve Come This Far

Back in the day, people used to think that they could make serious, literary films about porn. That might have been a necessary exercise, but those filmmakers just ended snooty smut peddlers. The cool smut peddlers just got straight to the heat.

In a similar fashion to porn, artists have constantly tried to make video games more than just a fleeting pastime. Joysticks was such a movie. The difference with this one is that instead of doing a goofy job of recreating a video game on the screen, the culture is the focus. This is actually very important to the growth of the video game culture, but unfortunately, there aren’t more movies like this.

You’re probably saying, “This looks like a bunch of crap!” Well, it is. But behind all the T & A is a concept that most will miss, videogames could have a whole culture around it that actually contained cool kids and interesting scenarios. I’ve seen The Guild before, and somehow, I don’t think it does the job.

Alright, I’m going out to watch a movie right now that won’t have anything to do with videogames. It probably won’t be as good as Joysticks, and it will probably cost me way too much, but at least I won’t feel dirty afterwards.
